SB1483 | Regulated hemp product retail facility registration w/ $1000 Yearly Fee

This Bill, sponsored by Senator Jennifer B. Boysko of VA's 38th District, would allow retailers to receive a retailer permit to sell hemp products for a year for $1000/retail location.

SB1483, sponsored by establishes a registration requirement for retailers selling regulated hemp products in the state of Virginia.

Key Provisions:

  • Registration: Businesses selling regulated hemp products for human consumption (oral or inhalation) must register with the state.

  • Fee:  A nonrefundable annual fee of $1,000 is required.

  • Renewal: Registrations are valid for one year and renewable annually for the same fee.

  • Location Specific:  Each retail location requires its own registration.

  • Temporary Events:  Businesses must notify the Commissioner at least 14 days before selling at temporary events (e.g., fairs, festivals & Farmer's Markets).

In essence, this bill mandates registration and a fee for retailers selling regulated hemp products to track and regulate the sale of these products. Although Governor Northam has already indicated that he is not in favor of SB1483, which is consistent with his legacy of restricting legal cannabis access, we should not be discouraged in showing our support. Northam's disapproval only demonstrates we are heading in the right direction.
